The creator behind Sisu TTRPG
Meet the Creator
Hi, I'm Marko - a Canadian tech professional with Finnish roots and a lifelong passion for computing and more recently for collaborative storytelling. I have been working with computers since 1985 and navigating the internet since its early days in 1995, accumulating decades of hands-on experience in web development, Linux server administration, programming, database administration, networking, and technical consultation.
I hold a university degree in Computer Science and have spent the better part of my career in command-line environments, which says something about my preference for systems that are clean, direct, and purposeful. I am also fluent in Finnish - a language and culture that has shaped the way I see resilience, hard work, and creative problem-solving.
Why I Made Sisu TTRPG
I enjoy tabletop roleplaying games as a social outlet, but many systems frustrate me with their complexity - dense rulebooks, sprawling modifier rules to try and remember, and lengthy character creation.
The concept of sisu - that distinctly Finnish spirit of resilience, determination, and improvisation - felt like the perfect foundation. A game that mirrors its namesake: adaptable, straightforward, and capable of handling any scenario you throw at it. Whether your table wants to explore a fantasy kingdom, survive a post-apocalyptic wasteland, investigate supernatural conspiracies, or chart the stars, Sisu TTRPG provides the framework without getting in the way of the story.
Some of the core things I wanted to have in Sisu:
- Use of all the dice types (because everyone loves using all their dice)
- Not much math involved (some will really appreciate this)
- Very few main ability stats (easy to remember and quick to lookup)
- Simple to level up your character (usually just involves looking up new skills)
- Requires the game master to plan and create things (because I personally love scenario and world creation)
This game is still a work in progress. I am continuing to play, refine, and expand it. If you bring it to your table, I hope it sparks great adventures.
